MAT 131 (CALCULUS I)-Fall 2014
Course Description: This is a course in differential calculus and
integral calculus where you will learn about derivatives and integrals and
their applications as well as the amazing connections that exist between them!
Calculators will not be used
this semester. By the end of the course, students will be able to compute
limits, derivatives, and antiderivatives and apply them to a variety of
situations in and outside mathematics. There will be a focus on concepts and
theory as well as computations and applications. Topics will be addressed
numerically, algebraically, and graphically. This is an exciting 4 credit
course which will require a great deal of your attention! A grade of C or
higher in this course may be used to satisfy the Quantitative Problem Solving
requirement of the Stony Brook Curriculum.

Syllabus: Your lecturer will determine what is covered in each

schedule.
Required materials: Single Variable calculus 4th edition(stony brook
edition) and webassign.
Grading: Exam #1 (20%) Monday, 9/22 at 8:45 PM covering 2.2,
2.3, 2.5, 2.4, 2.7, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4
Exam #2 (20%) Thursday, 10/30
at 8:45 PM covering 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 4.5, 4.1, 2.8, 4.3, 4.2, and 4.6
Final Exam (40%) Wednesday, 12/10 at 11:15 AM covering 5.1,
5.2, 5.3, 5.5, 5.4 and all sections covered on previous exams.
Recitation Participation
(10%) Attending recitation with your homework is considered mandatory! Here are
the homework problems from our
textbook for the course. Please consult your TA for his/her policy regarding
this 10% of the course grade.
WebAssign (10%) Beginning September 3, students will be assigned web-based exercises using an online system. Your access code can be purchased as webassign for MAT 131 in our bookstore. For questions related to WebAssign, please email Professor Andersen at randersen@math.sunysb.edu. Information on how to access this system will be brought to you via your Blackboard account by 9/1. Please pay careful attention to due dates as there are no extensions!
